DYSTOPIA AS UTOPIA

Cross-Class Project, October 23, 2026 – November, Opening reception on October 23, 2026, at 7:00 p.m., Projektraum kunst [ ] klima, Breitscheidstr. 104A, 70176 Stuttgart

The exhibition DYSTOPIA AS UTOPIA is conceived as an experimental space in which students develop narratives in which dystopia and utopia are inextricably intertwined.

The theme of dystopia primarily deals with totalitarian regimes and the associated control exerted through surveillance, propaganda, and the media. It is often characterized by a false utopia—a supposedly perfect system that masks strict social hierarchies, technological abuse, environmental destruction, or resource scarcity. Dystopia and utopia stand in apparent, irreconcilable contrast to one another, yet they define each other.

Dystopias can depict current social developments and fears, and by exaggerating these, they can be understood as a critique of the present. The contemporary relevance of the theme arises from the students’ engagement with the content.
